Between 6 and 9 months, fruits and vegetables make their grand entrance! Blended, pureed or as compote, they will bring color and new flavors into the lives of little ones.
Shopping for a 6-month-old baby
When it comes to vegetables, you have quite a few choices: beets, leek whites, broccoli, carrots, zucchini (seeded and peeled), spinach, green beans, sweet potatoes , parsnips, pumpkins or butternut squash , tomatoes, Swiss chard (both green and white parts), and artichokes can all be prepared for a 6-month-old baby. You'll quickly realize that babies have a weakness for mild, even slightly sweet, vegetables. But... don't worry: that doesn't mean they'll reject all the others... It might just take a few more tries on your part! Babies sometimes need a little time to appreciate certain foods. As for fruit, it's even simpler since everything is possible, even berries, kiwis, and exotic fruits ! Of course, organic and seasonal fruits and vegetables are best (but you already know that!).
Dinner's ready!
Now that you have the right ingredients, let's get started on vegetable purees and compotes ! While most babies prefer them smooth, feel free to vary the consistency with recipes that are more or less liquid, and even grate some raw fruits. To begin, it's ideal to feature just one fruit or one vegetable: this way, your child can discover the true taste of each! That's also why most of our pouches are single-fruit or single-vegetable. We certainly wouldn't want to confuse your baby's taste buds! Once your baby knows the taste of pear and apple by heart, you can offer them together to add variety to the recipes! In terms of quantity, keep in mind that between 6 and 12 months, babies need 250 to 450 grams of vegetables without added salt and 250 to 450 grams of cooked or raw fruit (if they are fully ripe).
Fruits and vegetables taste better when they are...
- organic
- seasonal
- n solo (a single fruit or vegetable featured)
- no added salt
- no added sugar
- cooked gently (for example, steamed)
- accompanied by a teaspoon of vegetable oil (for vegetables)
- lovingly prepared and varied
