First steps: at what age does a baby walk?

Your baby will soon be taking their first steps, and you're both looking forward to it and dreading it... We understand! Could they hurt themselves? Will they be scared? Are they starting too early or too late? We ask ourselves so many questions as we approach this major life milestone.

Rest assured, being well-informed will help you navigate these changes with greater peace of mind. And we'll do everything we can to support you by sharing our expertise in this area! Find all the useful information for your baby's first steps here:

When is my baby ready?

The first steps usually occur between 10 and 18 months.

Does it seem like a long time? That's because your baby has many other things to learn before they can walk. And that's a huge amount of work for them!

It's curiosity and the desire to explore their environment that drive your baby to walk. To achieve this, they must first develop the large muscles of their torso. These muscles support them and allow for the movements of their neck, shoulders, back, arms, and legs—what an athlete!

Standing unaided requires balance and muscle strength, as your baby has to support their entire upper body. Once they can do this, they can move on to learning to walk, much to your delight!

What are the major, unavoidable steps?

  1. He holds onto furniture or his parents to stand up. He sticks his bottom out and manages to sit up on his own before your very eyes (around 9 months).
  2. He starts walking sideways, always holding onto something. If he encounters an obstacle, he gets on all fours to move forward (around 10 to 11 months).
  3. He lifts his foot instead of sliding it on the floor, a real little acrobat! (around 11 to 12 months). ⇒ Your baby is taking the plunge!
  4. He can stand up without support and can pick up objects in front of him… Yes, yes, it’s time to put everything away! Some children manage to walk on their own and others need to hold your hand (around 12 months).
  5. He walks confidently and his pace is quickening. He will soon start to trot, taking faster steps, which often worries us in the early days. Rest assured, he will quickly show you that he is gaining better and better control of his body (around 18 months).
  6. Around the age of 2, children are excellent little walkers!

The ages indicated here are averages. If you have any concerns, please do not hesitate to speak with your child's doctor.

Several factors can influence when your baby will start walking: their height, weight, muscle strength, or simply their temperament.

We regularly hear "babies do only one thing at a time" and it's not wrong! Some will prefer to concentrate on language or fine motor skills, and others on walking.

And what am I supposed to do to help him?

⇒ We encourage him.

Learning to walk also means a few falls on your bottom... Ouch!

You've probably already felt like shouting, "Watch out, you're going to fall!" It's normal to want to protect him, but try not to worry him. If it happens, stay calm and comfort him gently.

⇒ We take care of him...
