When can baby eat pieces?
Introducing solid foods isn't just about showing your child different foods. It's also about offering them increasingly varied textures. Introducing finger foods—which starts between 8 and 12 months—allows you to keep things interesting! From pureed and mashed textures to soft, melt-in-your-mouth pieces, we'll explain everything!
From pureed to chunks: the great adventure of diversification continues
From milk and vegetable purees to sweetened compotes, until now, your little one has only known the liquid or smooth texture of food. Around 6-8 months, you can start mashing carrots, bananas, broccoli, etc., with a fork to gradually introduce them, from around 9 months, to eating increasingly "solid" foods. As your child grows, they'll develop more and more teeth, and not just for show! They'll be able to chew on small, finely chopped pieces: diced vegetables, apple sticks, ham and fish flakes... Generally, by 12-15 months, babies have enough teeth to chew softer pieces.
Although no two babies are alike, children generally start to really "bite" around the age of 18 months.
Baby may be a fan of musical pieces or completely resistant: no stress!
Some babies, too surprised by the change, may categorically refuse this new food. Don't worry! Try again a few days later. A good way to help your baby embrace the transition to solid foods is to start with something they're sure to love.
Contrary to what one might think, it's not recommended to start with a perfectly smooth purée with just a few small pieces. It's better to offer your little one "clear" foods: either a truly velvety purée or a meal with small pieces.
If your baby, when younger, took great delight in plunging both hands into their plate of purée, it's likely because they are very tactile and need to touch things before eating. In this case, don't hesitate to offer them a carrot or apple stick to hold, or let them knead a small bowl filled with cheese cubes or soft pasta.
