Baby Yoga: Really?!
When Monique, heavily pregnant just a few weeks ago, proudly told us she was practicing yoga with her newborn baby, our first instinct was to reply, "Oh yeah, and why not try Thai boxing while we're at it!? Apparently, they sleep through the night afterwards..." But after realizing she was serious, and that it was a revelation for her and her child, we wanted to know more.
Baby yoga, seriously?
Baby yoga is a little-known, playful activity that promotes sensory development and can be enjoyed by both mother and child. It's suitable from the moment the mother recovers from childbirth until the baby starts crawling and moving around quickly, at which point they can begin yoga.
"Baby Yoga" is a series of easy and gentle poses, extremely beneficial for both participants. Don't worry, it's nothing like the Vasypostatêtela Emétépyésurtaglote that, according to legend, even Shiva himself struggled with...
Yoga for babies, but why bother?
For the mother, it's already a great way to get back in shape after giving birth and to regain balance and harmony when her hormones are raging. This activity also allows the baby and mother to bond and to have shared time dedicated to their well-being.
For infants, yoga movements strengthen their spine, improve joint flexibility, and tone their body. This also helps them develop focus and awaken new motor skills while calming their restlessness. Indeed, since yoga is both a physical and mental exercise, by becoming aware of their small body, the baby's confidence will grow and they will learn to recognize their own limits.
OK, so how exactly do you practice "baby yoga"?
To do yoga with your baby, you don't need to go to India and lock yourself away in an ashram for three months. Simply put on comfortable clothes and settle down on a playmat (not on the changing table, your baby could fall!), and choose a time when your little one is calm and rested, for example after a nap.
For babies, yoga is innate, and we're not talking about the infamous "dirty diaper" position. No, you'll just need to help them a little to get into the right poses. Stay close, lay them on their back facing you, and breathe slowly. Your baby will synchronize their breathing with yours.
Are you ready to begin? Here's an example of a position:
Position #1:
Hold your baby's wrist and opposite ankle so that their palm and sole touch. Then gently repeat with the other arm and leg.
