Your baby will soon be taking their first steps, and you're both looking forward to this moment and dreading it... We understand! Could they hurt themselves? Will they be scared? Are they starting too early or too late? We have a lot of questions as this big milestone in life approaches.
Rest assured, by being well-informed, we can experience these developments with greater peace of mind. And we will do everything we can to support you, by sharing our knowledge in this area! Useful information for your baby's first steps is here:
When is my baby ready?
The first steps usually occur between 10 and 18 months.
Does that seem like a long time? That's because your baby has a lot more to learn before they can walk. And it's a huge undertaking for them!
It's curiosity and the desire to explore their environment that drive your baby to walk. To achieve this, they must first develop the large muscles of their trunk. These are the muscles that support them and enable movement of the neck, shoulders, back, arms, and legs—what an athlete!
Standing unassisted requires balance and muscle strength, as your baby needs to support their entire upper body. Once they can do this, they can move on to learning to walk, much to your delight!
What are the major essential steps?
- He clings to furniture or his parents to stand up. He points his bottom backward and manages to sit up on his own before your astonished eyes (around 9 months).
- He begins to walk sideways, always leaning on a support. If he encounters an obstacle, he gets on all fours to move forward (around 10 to 11 months).
- He lifts his foot instead of sliding it on the ground, a real little tightrope walker! (around 11 to 12 months). ⇒ Your baby is taking the plunge!
- He can stand up without support and can pick up objects in front of him... Yes, yes, it's time to put everything away! Some children manage to walk alone and others need to hold your hand (around 12 months).
- He's walking confidently and his gait is accelerating. He'll soon start to trot with faster steps, which often worries us in the early days. Rest assured, he'll quickly show you that he's gaining better control over his body (around 18 months).
- Around 2 years old, children are excellent little walkers!

The ages listed here are averages. If you have any concerns, please discuss them with your child's doctor.
Several factors can influence when your baby will start walking: their size, weight, muscle strength, or simply their temperament.
We often hear that “babies only do one thing at a time,” and it's not wrong! Some will prefer to focus on language or fine motor skills, and others on walking.
And what do I do to help him?
⇒ We encourage him.
Learning to walk also means a few falls on your butt... Ouch!
You've probably felt like shouting, "Watch out, you're going to fall!!!" It's normal to want to protect your child, but try not to worry them. If this happens, stay calm and comfort them gently.
⇒ We take care of him...
