When can baby eat pieces?

Quand bébé peut-il manger des morceaux ?

Diversifying your child's diet isn't just about introducing different foods to your child. It's also about offering them textures that are less and less homogeneous. So, introducing chunks—which begins between 8 and 12 months—allows you to vary the pleasures! Between ground, crushed, and soft chunks, we'll explain everything!

From ground to chunks: the great adventure of diversification continues

From milk to vegetable purees to sweet compotes, until now, your little one has only known the liquid or smooth aspect of food. Around 6-8 months, you can start mashing carrots, bananas, broccoli, etc. with a fork to gradually get him, from the 9th month, to eat more and more "substantial" foods. Gradually, your child will have more and more teeth and it's not (just) for show! He will be able to chew small, finely chopped pieces: diced vegetables, apple sticks, crumbs of ham and fish... Generally, from 12-15 months, the baby has enough teeth to be able to chew soft pieces.

Although no two babies are alike, generally children begin to really "bite" around 18 months of age.

Baby fan of pieces or completely resistant: no stress!

Some babies, too surprised by the change, may categorically refuse this new thing. Don't worry! Try again a few days later. A good idea to help them feel positive about the transition to pieces is to start with a food they're sure to love.

Contrary to popular belief, it's not recommended to start with a smooth puree with just a few small pieces. It's better to offer your little one "light" meals: either a really smooth puree or a meal with small pieces.

If your baby took great pleasure in plunging both hands into his plate of puree when he was younger, it's probably because he's very tactile and needs to touch before eating. In this case, don't hesitate to offer him the chance to hold his carrot or apple stick or let him knead a small bowl filled with cheese cubes or small soft pasta...
