Babies begin weaning at 4 months. First solid foods, first purées... We answer all your questions!
How much milk at 4 months?
That's it, your baby is 4 months old and can finally embark on the great adventure of Taste! But let's not forget, at 4 months, your baby's main food is still milk! At Good Goût, we encourage breastfeeding at least until your little ones are 6 months old... And that's also what the WHO recommends! Indeed, breast milk is the food best suited to the specific needs of babies.
A 4-month-old baby usually feeds about 4 to 5 times a day or takes between 180 and 240ml of infant formula, 4 or 5 times a day. Of course, it depends on your baby's rhythm: some babies can still feed every 2 hours or at night. At this age, we don't force the baby to finish his feed/bottle, we let him manage his satiety like a grown-up (and yes, he will eat his fill, he is not yet prone to gluttony). We can start to taste the first purees at this time.
What are baby's first foods?
We usually start weaning with cooked vegetable purees alone . We recommend taking your time and introducing vegetables alone for two weeks before offering your little gourmet his first fruits. You have to give delicious vegetables their chance, because the preference for sweets starts very early. After this time, we introduce the first cooked fruits alone, always one by one to be able to detect potential allergies and to introduce your baby to the real taste of food!
What are the first vegetables to give to a 4-month-old baby?
It is advisable to start with mild vegetables such as carrots, sweet potatoes or peas . And yes, starting with endive puree is a bit difficult for a brand new palate. So at first, avoid vegetables that are too rich in flavor, but also those that are harder to digest, such as cabbage or turnip.
And if the baby refuses a vegetable, don't stress, just let a few days go by before offering it again! We often hear that you can try 8 to 10 times before admitting defeat!
Which fruits at what age?
Once the 15 days of vegetables alone are over, we can tackle the discovery of fruits (yay!). Contrary to some preconceived ideas, all fruits can be given from 4 months as long as they are cooked, even exotic fruits! Same rule as for vegetables: we give the cooked fruit on its own so that the baby discovers the taste of food as best as possible and to be able to detect any possible allergies or intolerances as quickly as possible. We suggest you start with apple or banana, it always works! (By the way, have you heard of our mixed fruit pack ?)
We will wait a few months before giving raw (very ripe) fruit, when the baby's stomach is a little more developed!
How much puree for a 4 month old baby?
Pediatricians recommend starting solid foods with a few spoonfuls of vegetables at lunchtime (using a soft-tipped spoon), and gradually increasing the amount until you reach about 120 grams of smooth puree. The amount of breast milk or infant formula usually decreases as the amount of puree increases. Then, introduce fruit at snack time, until you reach about 100 grams.
What cereals for a 4-month-old baby?
With the start of weaning, it's time to give your baby their first cereals. Choose them gluten-free and sugar-free, and add them to their morning or evening bottle. We'll tell you everything in more detail here!
